Here's a section from the April 14, 2008 newsletter...

 ============================
1. MARKET WATCH - SPEC MARKET IS BOOMING!
============================

“..."Smash" is the first screenplay sale for Brown, who comes from a career in advertising..”
Variety, April 9, 2008.

“...In an unusual turn, newcomer Megan Parsons was actually on a cruise to Antarctica when the spec was sent out and only heard of the sale upon reaching the continent.”
Hollywood Reporter, April 9, 2008

“...Brad Ingelsby began last week as a 27-year-old AFI grad living with his parents in Pennsylvania and working for his father's insurance business. By Thursday, he'd made a fortune with his very first script, one that may get made quickly with Ridley Scott directing and Leonardo DiCaprio starring... $650,000 against $1.1 million for "The Low Dweller," his dark drama set in 1986 Indiana.”
Variety, March 23, 2008

“"Emma" (hip-hop musical version of the classic Jane Austen novel) marks the fifth project Benderspink has set up post-WGA strike.”
Variety, April 7, 2008.

“Kopelson Entertainment has financed a slate of spec scripts and pitches through its development fund Equus Media.”
Variety, March 17, 2008.

“Fox Atomic acquired Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton's spec "Pierre Pierre" for $1 million.  Jason Reitman is attached to direct and Jim Carrey is aboard to topline the comedy.  This marks Cannistraci and Seton's first screenplay in development.”
Variety, March 5, 2008.

Is it obvious something is going on here?

The market is booming!

And we should all take advantage.

I don’t know about you, but I’m currently writing every day and also using my network to try to build a solid list of Reps who are open to new material.  (All of the above sales were brokered by Agents or Managers.)

This looks like a really positive sign that the studios are getting back into the business of acquiring and developing material, after the downtime of the strike.  With emerging markets and the costs of production going down with digital media, they’re realizing that they can’t rely on only a slate of expensive tentpoles.  They need more low and mid-range fare, too, and it takes strong material to attract the talent that gets the financing.

Comedies and Thrillers are still king, but we’re seeing all kinds of genres selling, so act now to get your spec in submission-quality shape.

As I’ve always said, that begins with a focus on CRAFT, and then once your spec is in top form, a focus on a smart and professional SUBMISSION STRATEGY.
